RESIDENTS on Brisbane’s southside have called for more parking at Altandi train station.

They say parking is a nightmare, partly because the station offers the only express train between the Brisbane CBD and Beenleigh.

“It’s quite frustrating when you come here to catch the express (train) to the airport and there’s no car parks,” Eight Mile Plains resident Keith Brinin said.

“I can’t see where any improvements (in parking) are going to come from.

“A few years ago the express train used to stop at Coopers Plains but then they brought it (to Altandi). But the car park is a lot smaller than Coopers Plains.”

Another commuter, who wanted to be known only as Vivien, agreed.

“It varies but I’ve been here ... and the car park is absolutely full,” she said.

“About 40 or 50 people get onto the train with me when I get on. I have missed a train before due to parking.”

A third commuter said he had fewer problems parking but had run into trouble before.

“It’s probably once or twice a week you get stuck, otherwise it’s fine,” Stockleigh resident Chris Charrington said.

A TransLink spokesman said there were 103 parking spaces available at the station and also encouraged people to walk to the station or use public transport.

There are 10 bus routes that link residents to the station.

“A high percentage of public transport users arrive at Altandi station on foot or on a connecting bus,” the spokesman said.

“An expansion of commuter parking at Altandi station is not under consideration at this time.”

The TransLink spokesman said Queensland Rail had received three complaints about parking at the station since 2011.

Local bus routes that connect to the station are Route 123 (Griffith University Nathan Campus to Garden City), Route 130 (Drewvale to Brisbane City), Route 131 (Parkinson to Brisbane City), Route 132 (Parkinson to Garden City), Route 135 (Parkinson to Brisbane City) express, Route 136 (Calamvale to Spring Hill), Route 139 (Sunnybank Hills to University of Queensland), Route 140 (Browns Plains to Brisbane City), Route P137 (Sunnybank Hills to Brisbane City) and Route P151 (Calamvale to Brisbane City).

Attempts to contact Brisbane City Councillor (Runcorn ward) Kim Marx and State Labor MP for Sunnybank Peter Russo were unsuccessful.
