A SOUTHEAST Queensland council has enacted a coronavirus action plan, after their mayor said it was likely the disease would affect the community.

Redland City Council Mayor Karen Williams moved a motion to implement the action plan which would include reviewing the city’s pandemic plan and make plans to support the local economy.

Actions will include the council urgently looking into fast tracking some of the region’s capital works in order to take advantage of federal funding to boost economic activity.

In particular, the council will look at green sealing projects on Wellington St and Panorama Drive at Cleveland and will wirte to Brisbane City Council to encourage them to support a cross-boundary submission for the upgrade of major link road Rickertt Rd.

The council will also investigate local tourism and business incentives.

She also urged community members to continue to support local businesses after Councillor Wendy Boglary (Div 1) said she was contacted by a local fish and chip shop owner who said they were looking to lay off staff because of a sharp downturn in clientele.

“Please support our local economy, we’re not in that position yet where we shouldn’t be (carry out our usual activities),” Cr Williams said.

She also reminded the community to maintain personal hygiene practices including hand washing.

She said she had particularly considered the region’s large ageing population, which is more at risk of the virus.

“We know we have an ageing community here … people over 60 are most likely to contract coronavirus,” Cr Williams said, adding the council was working with the State Government on protection measures.
