TODAY marks 10 years since a fire ripped through Market Square, destroying more than 10 shops and forcing the evacuation of nearby residents.

The blaze broke out about 5.30pm on March 29, 2007, and quickly spread through the complex.

Investigations found that the fire began in one of the restaurants after cooking materials were left on a stove.

It took 40 firefighters an hour and a half to contain the blaze. No one was injured.

Ten years later, the shopping and restaurant hub has come a long way.

Since being rebuilt, Market Square has been a popular destination for international and local visitors alike. And it is only going to get bigger.

Market Square will become a four-storey hub under plans by Gum Hoy and the Lai Ming Yuen Family Trust.
