Spectator footy fight erupts

Footage has emerged of a wild fight at a Brisbane junior rugby league game at the weekend that has left father Josh Jones needing facial surgery.

Mr Jones suffered serious injuries during the fight at an Under-13s Division 1 game between Wynnum Manly and Logan Brothers at Kitchener Park in Wynnum on Sunday.

The footage shows a fight between rival fans spill from the grandstands onto the playing field. The fight involves up to 20 adults with some children coming close to the violence.

Spectators are heard screaming from the grandstand, with one woman shouting “This is f**king bulls**t” and another heard exclaiming “they started it”.

In the video, several people are seen throwing punches while a man is kicked in the head while he is down on the ground.

Numerous spectators charge towards the fight.

Police are searching for a 36-year-old Logan man after the incident.

Wynnum Police senior sergeant Wayne Richter confirmed the altercation was between two spectators in the stands before it was taken onto the field.

“A Logan spectator or supporter has had an altercation with people from Wynnum in grandstands, where there was an argument which has then turned physical and gone on into the field of play,” he said.

The victim Josh Jones, 35, of Manly West man, is believed to be having facial surgery today.

“The person from Wynnum was then assaulted and taken away in an ambulance with significant injuries.”

A GoFundMe page was set up yesterday to help Josh’s family with almost $4000 of the $10,000 target already raised.

“At this point he is still waiting for surgery. Josh was ready to commence with a new job on Tuesday, but now has no idea when he will be able to start,” organiser, Debbie Saint, wrote.

“Looking to raise funds to take the immediate financial pressure off this family, while they heal physically and emotionally.”

Sgt Richter called for anyone with more information on the incident to contact police.

“We’re treating the incident very seriously, we’re concerned about the conduct of adults at a sporting event involving teenagers and we won’t be tolerating this sort of behaviour,” he said.

There was also a second victim, a 59-year-old woman from Hemmant, who received minor injuries after the male victim fell on top of her while in the stands.

No charges have been laid.

A Queensland Rugby League spokesman confirmed they were investigating the incident.

“Both Rugby League Brisbane and the QRL acknowledge the serious nature of this incident and will ensure a thorough investigation and response in accordance with the game’s rules and code of conduct, while respecting the matter is also under investigation by the police,” he said.

“Due to these factors, the clubs, RLB and QRL are unable to provide any further comment at this time.”

Logan Brothers president Duane Antcliff said he was meeting with parents from the team tonight to discuss the incident.

He also said the club has been completely cooperative with police regarding the fight.

Wynnum Manly Junior Rugby League Football Club responded to the incident on Facebook, stating the board and staff “were co-operating with Queensland Police and Rugby League Brisbane in its investigations”.

“If you or someone you know has any information please send it to the club by email at admin@wynnummanlyjuniors.com.au.

“We are unable to comment on the events that occurred because the matter is now a criminal investigation.

“If you or someone you know has been affected by what happened yesterday please reach out to the club.

“You can do this by email, private message or Rugby League Brisbane will be organising for support at the club. Date and time will be advised when details are confirmed.”
