WELL things have changed and there was information right and wrong flying all over the place on the subject of going out to catch some fish.
I have to say, I was very happy to see the Minister finally come out and tell us, as long as we kept to the two person policy and social distancing, going out to get a feed of fresh fish was OK.
Lots of us fisherman let out a sigh of relief.

I managed a few days out and the fishing was very good, the squid season is going off with plenty of tiger squid in the shallows in the weed banks.
The arrow and cuttlefish are starting to show up in good numbers in the deeper water and at night.
The whiting have moved east of the shallow grounds at Chain Banks and Maroon Banks, and are in plentiful supply in the Rous Channel side of the Maroon Gutter, and at Amity Banks. There are also plenty in front of the small sand hill on the blue hole side.
The school mackerel are in very close, with big fish caught 100m past the entrance leads to Manly Harbour and in between King Island and Green Island, and also a few nice ones on the drop off heading towards the Chain Banks.
Apart from catching them trolling, I managed a couple by floating out a pillie while fishing for squid.
I have to say this week with all that is going on around us the best sight was seeing a dad and his son who followed our suggestions in the Wynnum Herald, on where and how to catch a mackerel out on the water.
Judging by the smile on young Sam’s face and his dad, Paul, looking very happy, I don’t think young Sam will forget his first mackerel, it made my day.

Personally that’s what this column and any other fishing reports is all about passing on whatever knowledge we have to the young ones so they can enjoy and pass it on in the future. Until next week stay safe, listen to the updates and warnings, and try and go out and catch a fresh fish for dinner.
Good fishing.
