A HISTORIC tavern on the southside labelled “tired” could be knocked down to make way for a new shopping village, according to Brisbane City Council.
While no development has been lodged for the 2.08ha Mansfield Tavern site on Wecker Rd, which was sold in February 2017 for $12.25 million, Deputy Mayor Adrian Schrinner says plans to revitalise the precinct were in the pipeline.
The land is owned by a private investor from NSW and is currently leased.
Cr Schrinner told the southside community via Facebook: “... There are plans to revitalise it as the suburb’s new vibrant shopping village.
“It’s still early days and a development application has not yet been lodged, but plans for the site could include a combination of the following: a fresh food market/local supermarket, a modern, family-friendly tavern, cafes and restaurants, boutique retail stores.
“I’ll be sure to let resident’s know when I have further news.”
There’s been a massive reaction from southsiders with the majority of them in favour of a shopping village with eateries — something like the Cooparoo Square-style precinct was floated as an idea.
But a few locals have noted the impact a shopping precinct could have on already congested Newnham, Creek and Wecker roads, something Cr Schrinner noted would have to be considered when and if a development application is lodged with council.
The Mansfield Tavern has a history as a live music venue in the 1970s and 80s, having hosted bands such as Hunters & Collectors, Madness, Hoodoo Gurus, The Angels and The Cult.
State Member for Mansfield Corrine McMillan said: “I will be taking a keen interest in the development application, particularly if it is able to provide extra services to the people of Mansfield.
“There’ll be a lot of factors to consider before approval is given and I am confident that local impacts will be given full consideration.”
Federal Member for Bonner Ross Vasta said: “This is great news for Mansfield residents. Development of the site will revitalise the area, creating more jobs and giving local families an exciting new precinct to enjoy.”
Cr Schrinner has been contacted for comment.
What the community thinks
Janelle Miller: It’s been very tired looking for a long time. The area is very outgrown for residential and more is needed. People wanting to live in a good distance to the city.
Victor Phillips: Excellent news, this is what is needed in our suburbs!
Kylie Elms: Positive attitude guys — I’m excited that the old hood is being revived.
Brad Wessling: That’s great news, will do wonders for our property values as well. Bring it on!
Ros Doyle: A new tavern would be good — don’t need any more shops
Richard Jeffreys: Good move, it sure was tired even 20 years ago!
Kath Gallichan: Sounds great. Just what we need.
Alma Campbell-McKechnie: Great news for southsiders.
Sheree Cox: Excited to hear the future plans.
Kirstie Justus: hopefully some nice little cafes for breakfast and coffees.
Liz Schultze: Woohoo! it’s an eyesore. So old and run down. Can’t wait for the new complex — a Coorparoo Square in Mansfield! I’m up for that!
