Brisbane patients requiring crucial mental health care are set to benefit from plans to build a private hospital on Brisbane’s northside, with mental health and allied care services headlining the five-building development.
RAM Australia Property Services Pty Ltd has lodged a development application (DA) for a private hospital development in a combination of five new and existing buildings, at 20 Nellie St, Nundah.
The proposed 60-bed mental health facility was part of a joint venture between Aurora Healthcare and Medibank, known as IMH.
It would deliver an innovative integrated private facility providing healthcare to meet increasing demand for mental health services across Brisbane.
The mental health component would be in one building, with more health and allied health services located across two other buildings.
Food, drink, office and indoor sport and recreation space would be spread across another two buildings.
The hub would be a sister facility to Belmont Private Hospital in Brisbane’s southside.
It would facilitate treatment for low-acute, voluntary in-patients and out-patients with “high-prevalence’’ disorders.
“The proposed development will not operate like a traditional medical/surgical hospital, including no emergency vehicles and regulated waste,’’ the Da said.
“It is unlikely to create any additional amenity impacts to the current approved development.
“From an operations perspective, unlike a more traditional medical hospital, the proposed mental health facility will not accept emergency patients, with admissions occurring during business hours, and won’t generate regulated waste.
“The treatment and service delivery offered is based on a recovery model, supporting individuals and families to increase their mental wellness through a multidisciplinary approach offering a range of outpatient and inpatient options around their care and recovery.
“All patients will be voluntarily accessing services and making informed and inclusive decisions about their treatment plans.
“Patients choose to be admitted and or attend a day program to access support, therapy and education as part of their treatment plan.”
Brisbane City Council granted development approval in April, 2020 for a Material Change of Use (Development Permit) for the site, which would allow anything from a childcare centre and indoor sport and recreation to offices and shops.
The new application from RAM Australia Property Services Pty Ltd sought to amend that DA, replacing the child care use and a large portion of the approved offices with the mental health hospital in building 1.
The proposed health hub would be within 700m of Nundah Village, Nundah Station and Oxenham Park.
The hospital would stand between two to five storeys high and cover 10,590 sqm of gross floor area ,with 214 car parking spaces for the entire hub.
The hospital would operate 24 hours a day but with patient admissions, outpatient sessions, visiting hours and deliveries from 6am-10pm.
