MP Ross Vasta pushes for intersection fix at Mt Gravatt East
A COMMUNITY petition demanding a fix to the notorious intersection of Newnham and Wecker roads at Mt Gravatt East has been launched by an MP. It follows recent data that ranked it the fifth worst intersection in the state.

FEDERAL Member for Bonner Ross Vasta has launched a community petition to fix the intersection of Newnham and Wecker roads at Mt Gravatt East.
Mr Vasta is seeking Federal funding to upgrade the intersection which has been ranked the fifth worst in Queensland.
It comes as the Southern Star ran a story last week about RACQ backing concerns, with crash frequency data revealing seven serious crashes and nine serious casualties at the intersection between 2014 and 2017.
“I’m starting this petition on behalf of local residents and commuters who’ve contacted me about this dangerous intersection,” Mr Vasta said.
“I’m asking for the community’s support before someone is killed.
“Several people have told me about near misses and crashes they witness at the intersection week after week. “
Mr Vasta said he had recently written to the Brisbane’s Lord Mayor Graham Quirk to request assistance in improving the intersection.
He said if the community and all tiers of government worked together the intersection could get fixed.
Mansfield resident Janet Ham wrote to the Southern Star to say thank you for “raising concerns about this intersection”.
“It is particularly bad around peak hours. It is a very busy intersection with five major roads feeding into it,” she said.
“... I will not ever attempt a right turn into Wecker Rd from Newnham Rd. Many of us go down Mingera St and turn left or right into Wecker Rd as needed.
“When coming from Cavendish Rd or Creek Rd to travel up Newnham Rd. I have nearly been run into by cars turning right in front of me as they attempt to get through the intersection,” Ms Ham said.
Something definitely needs to be done to prevent the many crashes and near misses here.”
