Mansfield Tavern redevelopment plans unveiled
A TAVERN in Brisbane’s south could soon be turned into a “destination” not unlike Fortitude Valley’s James St, if plans lodged to Brisbane City Council are approved. But the proposed redevelopment is already causing a stir within the community.

MANSFIELD Tavern could soon be turned into a “destination” not unlike Fortitude Valley’s James St, if plans lodged to Brisbane City Council are approved.
The Wecker Road Markets will be a “community node and meeting place” that offers a unique centre that “improves connectivity and is highly permeable for pedestrians and cyclists”.
The centre is expected to be “more than merely a place to collect the weekly groceries” and will become a “destination” for Mansfield.
The development application for the 181 Wecker Rd site, which is 2.08ha, was submitted on behalf of Mansfield Investment Queensland Pty Ltd.
The development project is designed by architects Cottee Parker and will have a feel similar to that of Fortitude Valley’s James Street precinct and Southport’s Brickworks.
This development application is for Stage 1 only. Stage 2 and 3 of the development will be lodged as a separate development applications and assessed by council concurrently.
Stage 1 will include the new tavern, a new bottleshop fronting Wecker Rd, 218 carparking spaces, which are accommodated on the ground level and within a basement, three active retail and commercial tenancies, split over two levels and new pedestrian connections between each stage to Wecker Rd and Luprena St.
So far, there has only been one submission to council from a member of the public about the proposed project.
Mansfield resident Bradley Burns wrote: “This development sounds like a fantastic improvement to the lifestyle of Mansfield residents. I am looking forward to seeing how this development is executed and what businesses it attracts. Please, please, please have a good cafe and not a mass produced one!”
Another local, who asked to remain anonymous told the Southern Star she was yet to submit her views on the project to council but didn’t want the development right near her home.
“Construction will go on for years,” she said.
“It is going to be very disruptive to our lives.
“Although the shops will be good for locals, the construction process will be painful.”
Cottee Parker Architects director Martin Timms told the Southern Star recently the development would not be “a large-scale centre” and would transform an “under-utilised community space”, into “the retail hub of Mansfield”.
Mr Timms said there’d been a full traffic study done of both the current and proposed developments and the different loadings the road would experience up to 2030.
The Wecker Rd land and building was sold in February 2017 for $12.25 million and is owned by a Sydney-based private hotelier.
The development application for Stage 1 was lodged on October 26. Council will assess the application.

This is very exciting news. Well done. If only the land owners of the proposed shopping centre on Scrub Road in Carindale could get hold of this architect to do some magic with the centre layout. Some TLC needed with the plans.
