In a remarkable display of compassion, a quarter of a Brisbane private school’s Year 12s rallied together and cut their ponytails off, raising $15,000 for the Cancer Council.
The Loreto College, Coorparoo class of 2023 has undertaken the Cancer Council’s ‘Ponytail Project’, a final act before they graduate.
This courageous endeavour coincides with their graduation from Loreto in its 95th year.
The ‘Ponytail Project’ is a nationwide fundraising campaign aimed at assisting those affected by cancer.
Under the motto ‘Rock the chop and save lives’, 35 students participated in this high-impact initiative.
This project involved cutting ponytails.
Longer ponytails are sent to Sustainable Salons to create wigs for cancer patients.
Shorter lengths are directed towards the Hair Boom Project, where it is used in research, environmental disaster cleanup, or composting.
The Loreto Class of 2023 has raised $15,000.
Year 12 student, Amelia Coorey said it is a testament to the school’s mission to see their schooling journey culminating in a project that reflects the values and vision of Loreto.
“Our theme this year has been to ensure the dignity of each person, so raising funds for those in need is no better way to finish our schooling. That’s why we are supporting the Cancer Council’s ‘Ponytail Project’, Ms Coorey said.
“The Class of 2023 at Loreto College Coorparoo are academically focused and deeply committed to making a positive impact in the world.
Loreto’s principal Kim Wickham said she was so proud of these wonderful girls who represent the very best.
“They are inspirational young women who will leave our community a better place,” Ms Wickham said.
“Mary Ward, the foundress of Loreto College, believed in empowering women to pursue truth and justice.
“It’s a legacy that continues to inspire students today as they dedicate themselves to making a difference.
