PLAYERS with more than 3000 NRL games collectively will take to BMD Kougari Oval this weekend to help support cancer sufferers as part of the Kim Walters Choices Program.
A combined Wynnum Manly and Redlands Juniors Bayside team will clash with an All-Stars team featuring some of the legends of rugby league, with the aim to raise more than $10,000 for charity.
The program is a free community service offering support to people diagnosed with cancer at the Wesley Hospital, and was started after the wife of Queensland State of Origin coach Kevin Walters died from breast cancer in 1998.
Walters will coach a team including with legends Craig Greenhill, Petero Civoniceva and Preston Campbell on Saturday with dual-international and All Blacks legend Brad Thorn also playing in the match.
Greenhill, who played 116 NRL games and seven State of Origin games for Queensland during his career, said it was great to see so many legends give up their time for the cause.
“It’s great to see so many of the former players get behind the cause and support Kevvie as well,” he said.
Chris Green will captain the Bayside team in the match, which starts at 1.30pm.
Redlands Junior Rugby League development manager Troy Clarkson, who is organising the event, said the game was a chance to see some big names on the field once again while also supporting a great cause.
“The players we have for the game is an incredible list – there’s 3349 NRL games between them,” he said.
“Combining the function on Friday night and the game, we’re hoping to raise over $10,000.”
Kick-off is at 1.30pm and cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children.
