A FREE ferry service operating between Bulimba and Teneriffe is one answer to the area’s traffic congestion woes put forward by council candidate Kara Cook.
The Labor candidate for the Morningside by-election said the crossing between Bulimba and Teneriffe was a critical public transport link for the area and more needed to be done to encourage commuters to use the ferry.
Ms Cook launched a petition on the weekend calling on the council to introduce a new free CityHopper Ferry Service between Bulimba and Teneriffe.
“The new CityHopper Service would see the existing cross-river service become free of charge for all users,” Ms Cook said.
“A free ferry service would encourage more locals to use the service, helping to take the pressure off local roads and allowing a more convenient and cost-effective route to and from home.
“Once on the other side of the river, locals have access to the express City Glider Bus through the Valley, CBD and over to South Brisbane and West End or they can choose to walk or ride to their destination.”
Traffic congestion and transport issues were the top issue that played out in last month’s state election with the LNP promising to investigate new river crossings and Labor MP for Bulimba Di Farmer offering a multi-pronged public transport plan including major railway station upgrades and “fairer fares”.
Ms Cook said Morningside Ward commuters experienced some of the worst travel times during peak-hour, taking 47 minutes to travel 3.7km from Bulimba to the CBD.
“Despite this existing congestion crisis, the LNP Lord Mayor Graham Quirk, with his massive council majority, continues to approve more units while providing no new traffic and transport solutions,” she said. “If we want to protect the character of our local area and the quality of life we enjoy we need new solutions.”
