A mega $15 million expansion, including a 200-seat function centre and luxury island bar, has kicked off at a Brisbane leagues club as it aims to compete with the upcoming launch of the long-awaited Queen’s Wharf project.

The Carina Leagues Club, recently named Large Club of the Year by Clubs Queensland, started work this week to upgrade amenities and add three food and beverage extensions.

Carina Leagues’ newest project comes off the back of another major revamp in 2020 when it added a cafe and a sports bar.

General manager Adam Wiencke said the major upgrade would set a new standard for Queensland clubs and venues and would support the long-term future and growth of the club.

“We love our local community. We’re excited this renovation is going to build a state-of-the-art food and beverage, gaming and entertainment space, right in their backyard,” he said.

“Community is at the heart of what we do here so it was important we prioritised

families, friends and locals when designing the renovations.”

“Equally important has been future-proofing the club to ensure we remain part of the

community.

“It’s no secret large corporate developments, such as Queen’s Wharf, coupled with the rising cost of living, have made it even more important for local clubs like ours to adapt to our community’s needs.”

The first stage of the renovations would include a new 200-seat function centre, a new all-purpose luxury Island bar, a refreshed kitchen and Italian dome pizza oven, plus a cafe extension.

The extension would allow for more than 150 people in the cafe alone.

“On top of those upgrades, we are also enhancing the workplace environment for our

employees with upgraded staffrooms, offices and boardrooms,” Mr Wiencke said.

“Because families are at the core of what we do here.

“We’re extending our well-known kids area – Playland by 40 per cent, plus three kids’ party rooms.

“We’re also giving the entire space a facelift and a secret new look and feel.”

The new function centre would be used for everything from weddings, to corporate events and Mr Wiencke said he believed it would become an iconic function space on Brisbane’s southside.

Carina Leagues would remain operational throughout the upgrades.

Stage one was expected to be completed by mid-September and all works by Christmas this year.

The next stages of the expansion would start in 2025.
