BAYSIDE Commonwealth Games hero Georgia Godwin concedes it was difficult to focus again for October’s world titles after the euphoria of her medal-winning efforts on the Gold Coast in April.

Godwin was lauded for her silver and bronze medals which were captured in front of family, friends and a vocal home crowd during the Commonwealth Games.

The past student of Moreton Bay College then returned to her training base at Delta Gymnastics to a see a life-size poster of herself dangling from the complex as children gathered to greet her and have photos with her and her medals.

Being the centre of attention did not come naturally to the down-to-earth Godwin who is now training ahead of October’s world championships.

“It had been difficult to focus after the success and excitement of the Games,’’ she said.

“I have found it kind of difficult to refocus after the high of Commonwealth Games, the nationals and my short holiday.

“My fitness and skill level had dropped and the simple skills weren’t that easy anymore.

“I didn’t know how I was ever going to get back to competing, and was struggling daily, but my coaches, teammates and family helped me through the tough times.

“I’m pretty much back to my Commonwealth Games fitness now and I am prepared to do the hard work in preparation for worlds.’’

Now back to fitness, Godwin said her success at the Games had given her confidence.

“I now believe that I can actually be a contender at international competitions,” she said.

“But I also know that there’s heaps of hard work to do between now and October if I want to be able to compete against the best in the world.’’

She said she aimed to “hit all my routines cleanly and potentially pop in a few skill upgrades’’ at the world championships.
