Police prosecutor senior constable Jodie Tahana said the majority of the purchases were made at David Jones and included items like Tommy Hilfiger watches and clothes and Apple products.

She said police were easily able to track him down because he had the items delivered to his home address on Brisbane’s southside.

The court heard that Niyitunga, who was 18 at the time of offending, was currently studying commerce at university.

Niyitunga’s lawyer said he had fell into a friendship circle who introduced him to this type of offending during a period when he was struggling with depression and anxiety.

The court heard the young man had a clean criminal history and the judge chose not to record a conviction.

He was sentenced to complete an 18-month period of probation and ordered to complete 100 hours of unpaid community service.

He was also ordered to pay $10,000 in restitution.
