Drug problems continue to plague street in Wynnum West

It may look like any other suburban street in Brisbane, but this one hides a dark, notorious underbelly that makes it one of the city’s most notorious drug hot spots.

DRUG problems are continuing to plague a pocket in a usually quiet Brisbane bayside suburb. Primrose Parade in Wynnum West, a street which includes several Department of Housing properties, has been identified by Wynnum Police as a hot spot for drug activity after several busts in the area over the past six months.

The issue was also brought to light after Wynnum West recorded one of the top 15 Brisbane suburbs for drug arrests in the past two years with 295 arrests and also follows on from an operation by Wynnum and Capalaba Police as well as the Tactical Crime Squad in March, where 10 people were charged with a total of 20 offences.

As a result of Operation Sierra Birl, police executed search warrants at several addresses on Primrose Parade in response to public concerns and information received about drug and property related issues in the area.

“A total of six search warrants were executed on the day... a quantity of drugs and drug utensils was seized, and a stolen motor was recovered as well as two people arrested for Bail Act offences,” Wynnum Police senior sergeant Wayne Richter said.

“This is the result from Community involvement and information they’ve supplied to Crime Stoppers.”

Snr-Sgt Richter said cleaning up drug activity in the area in Wynnum West was a priority for police.

“We’re aware that it has been a problem for a little while now and we are working with the housing commission and other parties to fix this as much as possible,” he said.

“We just want to make it a safer place for everyone there and especially the other people in that area who aren’t doing these types of things and are just trying to live their lives.

“We have obviously done a number of operations, including the latest one, and we will be doing a number of things targeting this type of activity for the rest of the year to address this as quick as possible.

“But these types of operations aren’t successful without the help of the community and its residents, as shown by the latest operation, so I just encourage people to work with us and help us with any information or activity they might see.”
