MURARRIE Recreation Reserve is set to become the city’s first dedicated bike park under a major upgrade from Brisbane City Council.

Currently the home of one of the state’s largest racing cycling clubs, Balmoral Cycling Club, the former dump site which closed in the 1970s is now able to be developed and council has put forward a draft concept plan.

The draft plan includes a BMX track, a 2km cycle loop and a learn to ride area along with playing fields, a new park and a possible dog off-leash area.

Councillor Lisa Atwood (Doboy) is calling on residents to have their say about the concept plan.

“Murarrie Recreation Reserve is currently home to the Balmoral Cycling Club and supports many keen cyclists in the local area,” she said.

“Council plans to upgrade the facility to better support cycling in the community.”

Cr Atwood said a bike park would be a great addition to the community and would link in with the Minnippi Bikeway.

“Suburban facilities like this get more people outdoors, having fun and getting fit and healthy,” she said.

“I will be speaking to the community every step of the way through this consultation and look forward to hearing what people think.”

The draft plan also includes three new junior cricket fields, an update of the Vicki Wilson Playground, sealed 435 space car parking and another 30 space car park, a naturalised drainage channel, a new open pavilion and enhanced seating and shelters.

The reserve’s skate park underwent a $380,000 upgrade opened last year.

Located at 1238 Wynnum Road, the reserve already features a bikeway and canoe ramp to Bulimba Creek, the Balmoral Cycling Club’s clubhouse, criterium cycle circuit, playgrounds and a skate facility and basketball half court and fields.

An information session will be held at the Balmoral Cycling Club from 3-4.30pm on Saturday, August 24.
