Councillor reveals plans to add more facilities to popular waterfront strip

A popular waterfront strip on Brisbane’s south is set for more upgrades and one city leader believes it will rival any other foreshore north of the river.

A BRISBANE councillor has lit the fuse of his counterparts from the other side of the river after claiming a picturesque strip on Brisbane’s bayside beats anything similar from the northside.

Councillor for Wynnum Manly (ALP) Peter Cumming made the claim after it was revealed the popular foreshore in Wynnum and Manly is set to undergo more upgrades in the near future.

Cr Cumming said he planned to add a full-length basketball court on the strip to add to the long list of facilities already available along the water.

“I think this helps our great foreshore become an even bigger hub for activity,” he said.

“We’ve seen more and more people head down to the area, even during the COVID restrictions, and something like a basketball court will only add to it.

“We already have parks, playgrounds, water parks, a wading pool and more and now this will bring something that older people can enjoy as well as youngsters.

“It’s hard to compare the foreshore to any other places because I think it’s unique but I definitely think it’s better than anything like it on the northside or at Sandgate and places like that.”

Final details and an exact location are still being worked out for the court, which will be the second in the Wynnum and Manly suburbs, after one was built on Wondall Rd at Manly West more than four years ago.

Cr Cumming said improvements were being made to the popular lighthouse play area on the foreshore and it definitely wouldn’t be the end of upgrades to the waterfront strip.

“We’re always looking at different ideas and things to make the area better,” he said.

Cr Cumming also said the Wynnum Wading Pool would remain closed until the September school holidays.
