A GRAND plan to redevelop the Redlands’ gateway to North Stradbroke Island and Moreton Bay has been revealed.

Walker Corporation has unveiled its $1.3 billion Toondah Harbour masterplan, which will transform the area into a tourism, residential and dining hub with four times the current parkland and open space.

The project, built next to Moreton Bay Marine Park, has been referred to the Commonwealth Government for assessment under the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Act.

The 15 to 20-year project is expected to provide about 1000 jobs during construction, 500 jobs on completion and inject $2.3 billion into the economy.

Redland City Council Mayor Karen Williams said the project would attract people from across southeast Queensland to the new ferry terminal and dining and recreational destination.

“It’s been designed to bring people through Cleveland and not bypass it,” Cr Williams said.

Cameron Costello, chief executive of the Quandamooka Yoolooburrabee Aboriginal Corporation, the native title holder of Stradbroke Island/Minjerribah and parts of Toondah Harbour, was cautiously supportive of the plan.

He said it needed to address environmental and native title issues.

“They have got a few hurdles to jump over but everyone believes Toondah Harbour needs to be upgraded to provide a better gateway to the bay,” he said.

Mr Costello said the timing was good because it would create jobs to replace those lost when sand mining ended on Stradbroke.

Redland City Chamber of Commerce vice president James Hill said the new residential blocks would bring more customers to the area.

Walker Corporation general manager Queensland development Peter Saba believed the project would make the harbour a “regional destination”.

He said a new ferry terminal and port would be built south of the current one, with covered walkways, kiosks, a ticket booth and opportunities for tourism operators.
