Capalaba Cycles will cease operation on September 25

A legendary bike shop, which has served a region just east of Brisbane, has announced it will close its doors after almost 25 years.

A legendary bike shop near Brisbane’s east has announced it will close its doors after more than two decades.

Capalaba Cycles owners 66-year-old Wayne and Anna Mullins, 68, will shut up shop for the final time on September 25 after making the decision to retire.

The couple opened the store in 1996 with Mr Mullins’ family having a long history in cycling retail after previously owning a shop in Redcliffe with his brother.

Mr Mullins celebrated 50 years in the industry this year.

However, after a tough year, including struggles arising from the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as retirement approaching, the Capalaba residents decided it was finally time to step away.

“The decision came after the COVID pandemic, we can’t get stock, we’ve sold most of our bikes and it’s just impossible to get other stuff in right now,” Mr Mullins said.

“Then someone else bought our unit where our shop is here, so all those factors on top of our age, it was just the right time.”

Mr Mullins said it was a tough decision to make and they have been amazed by the response from customers.

“We have so many loyal customers, who rather come to us for the friendly service and all that rather than go to franchise stores,” he said.

“A lot of people said they were happy for us but that they were sad because we’ve been here for a long time.”

Ironically, Mr Mullins said the plan now was to go and do some cycling along with travel, gardening and for his wife to get back into painting and sketching.

The decision has hit the couple’s customers with the business’ Facebook page flooded with messages.

“My family will miss you all our kids had bikes from you and will be very sad such a friendly shop and fantastic bikes,” one customer said.

“Thank you Anna and Wayne for all your support and the many bikes, services and spares you have helped us with over the many years. Will be greatly missed here in Redlands,” another customer said.

Mr Mullins said bike lovers still had the chance to get in and buy something before they closed down.
