THE redevelopment of the Bulimba Barracks site is one step closer, after Brisbane City Council endorsed a major amendment to the City Plan 2014 today.
It comes after Quest Community News revealed in April that the State Government’s Economic Development Queensland placed a bid for the 20ha site.
It includes amendments to the Bulimba district neighbourhood plan, preferred land use guidelines, heritage, flooding, parkland, roads and pedestrian issues, the use of riverfront and necessary infrastructure upgrades.
The development is expected to include a mix of housing types, a new neighbourhood centre, a riverfront park, land-based Riverwalk, new streets and infrastructure upgrades.
City planning committee chairman Julian Simmonds said he had asked the State Government to investigate the possibility of including a park ‘n’ ride facility.
“The State Government has confirmed in writing that they are investigating a park ‘n’ ride as it falls within their responsibility,” Cr Simmonds said.
Morningside councillor Shayne Sutton said she supported the park ’n’ ride, but also called for a 3ha park to be publicly rather than privately owned.
Cr Sutton also called for greater attention to traffic infrastructure issues in the area.
“The queues on Hawthorne Rd are getting longer and longer,” she said.
“It is a massive traffic headache that this administration needs to start looking at much more closely.”
The amendments will now be sent to the State Government, requesting a state interest review. After that, there will be another round of public consultation.
In December, council endorsed its Bulimba Barracks Master Plan. A Temporary Local Planning Instrument is in place, providing statutory support to the draft master plan, and is due to expire on June 9, 2017.
