FOURTH RUNNER UP: MR ROBERTS GENTLEMEN’S HAIRDRESSER, MT GRAVATT

Words by owner Jaime Lendich.

Tell us about your shop: When did you open, do you have any specialties?

Mr Roberts has been apart of Mount Gravatt for over 90 years – that’s right, 90 years.

We are an old-school barber shop.

I have gentlemen coming into the shop who are going on 100 years’ old and they have been coming since they were little boys.

We specialise in just about everything.

We do young babies right up to 100-year-old men, basic cuts right up to skin fades and the latest trends, flat tops, beard trims, cut throats and lots, lots more.

What makes your shop ‘a cut above’?

I think our shop is a cut above other barbershops for our customer service and the way we go out of our way to help our clients and community.

It’s the experience and atmosphere, people love it and want to come back.

If one of our older clients is sick or in hospital, we will make a point of going to them to cut there hair.

Having a haircut can make you feel a little bit better then going through hard times.

We also work with a lot of kids with disabilities, we understand them and work with care and patience.

Why did you become a barber?

I got into hairdressing because my grandfather was a barber and he taught my father how to cut hair and passed it down to me.

I love my job and I hope I make my grandfather happy and proud.

Who is the most famous person who has ever been to Mr Roberts for a cut?

We had one of the most incredible, amazing men I have ever met come into our store frequently.

His name was Ray Horn, Jeff Horn’s grandfather.

Maybe Ray wasn’t famous but he was an incredible man and he couldn’t have been prouder of his grandson.

We also get the Lucas (Ben, Isaac, Matt and Tom, who play rugby union) brothers and their father come in.

They have since gone back overseas to play football.

We also have had basketballer Mitch Young (who now manages the Logan Thunder) and rugby union player Will Genia.

I moved over to Australia from South Auckland in 2017 on a mission to grow my passion in the barbering industry and to inspire young talent that dreams can come true – if you put your faith in your talents and God you are invincible.

True ability comes from your heart and hard work and perseverance will lead to achieving goals

My goal for Sonsofbarbers is to be a great role model for all and to serve in the name of the lord.
