Paid parking introduced to the Brisbane Powerhouse to help curb carpark hogs

Brisbane’s Powerhouse has introduced parking fees in what it says is a bid to stop neighbours and visitors to nearby New Farm Park from hogging sought-after spaces, but it will hit honest patrons too. Here’s what it will cost.

Brisbane’s Powerhouse has introduced parking fees of up to $9 to stop non-patrons and neighbours hogging car parks.

The measure, which came into force today on land owned by Brisbane City Council, would also help the venue to boost revenue after it suffered losses during last year’s Covid lockdowns.

The popular inner-city venue borders the well-patroned New Farm Park and has been plagued by non-patrons taking up parking spaces.

As of today, patrons will be charged $5 for up to three hours with the first 30 minutes of parking free.

After that, it will cost $9 to park at the Lamington St venue up to 12 hours.

A nightly flat rate of $9 kicks in from 5pm.

Powerhouse marketing and communications director Giuliana Bonel said it was hoped the “reasonably priced” fees would deter residents living close by and ferry commuters from monopolising the 148 spaces.

“The car park regularly reaches capacity with significant demand from patron and non-patron use,” Ms Bonel said.

“The managed parking will ease overflow and congestion issues and the money will all go to the venue and the arts.

“We have kept the same number of carparks and the fees are reasonably priced compared to other city-fringe parking.

“This is aimed at prioritising parking for our patrons who drive here to see a show and on arrival find there are no car parks.

“Residents have had some concerns about the added pressure on the nearby streets but there has always been that pressure — this is inner-city living in apartments.

“We are really encouraging patrons to look at alternative ways to travel to the Brisbane Powerhouse.”

There is a CityCat ferry stop 200m from the front door and Brisbane City buses ply the streets to New Farm Park.

Ms Bonel said those going to New Farm Park would be able to park on the ring road around the park.

There are six designated accessible parking spaces for disabled permit holders.

Cameras will also operate at the car park entry and exit points.
