The Brisbane Firehawks, one of the bids to become the city’s second NRL team and rival the Broncos, has unveiled its logo as the race for a license heats up.

After announcing its name and colours in June, the Firehawks bid from the Eastern Suburbs District Rugby League Football Club Inc has released the logo design it will use on all uniform and merchandise if successful.

ARL Commission chairman Peter V’landys is exploring expansion for either the 2022 and 2023 seasons.

The Easts Tigers have a long history in the Intrust Super Cup, but their dream to enter the big league forced a brand re-think due to the presence of the Wests Tigers in the NRL.

“It is a combination of a swooping raptor and burning flames,” he said.

As a result, the Tigers revealed their NRL-aligned Firehawks nickname in June and now they have gone a step further by unveiling a logo as part of their push to join the Broncos in the Telstra Premiership.

Easts Tigers CEO Brian Torpy said the logo was created by leading Australian design firm Inkahoots Design, who are based in West End, Brisbane.

“The logo captures the essence of the Firehawk, which is a group of Australian raptor species that intentionally spread wildfires by carrying smouldering branches to unburnt areas.

“For thousands of years the Aboriginal people have sung stories about the sacred Firehawks, who according to folklore, use fire to hunt and introduced fire to humans.”

The logo colours include orange, which represents the history of the Easts Tigers, as well as blue and gold, Brisbane’s official colours.

The Firehawks are one of several bids in the hunt to become Brisbane’s second NRL team, with the Brisbane Bombers and a Redcliffe-based outfit also in the running.

In March, Torpy told News Corp he had contacted NRL hierarchy with a view to joining the top flight and creating a North versus South derby with the Brisbane Broncos.

“We’re certainly interested, there’s no doubt about that,” Torpy said.

“I haven’t spoken to Peter V’landys but we’ve already had preliminary discussions with the NRL. We spoke to them to get an awareness of what would be needed to get involved.

“We are keen to find out more information from the NRL on their plans for expansion and what is required.

“We haven’t been mentioned in the expansion race until now but we believe we are the perfect option for a 17th team.

“The Broncos are on the northside and we are on the southside so it sets up a great River Rivalry.

“A North versus South derby with the Broncos sounds pretty exciting for Brisbane fans doesn’t it?”
