FIVE historic homes will be protected from demolition by Brisbane City Council.

Neighbourhood Planning and Development Assessment Chair Amanda Cooper today revealed the council would protect five heritage homes in Highgate Hill and the city centre to ensure their historical significance for future generations.

Cr Cooper said the council would seek to immediately implement a draft Temporary Local Planning Instrument (TLPI) to preserve the character of sites containing pre-1911 buildings on Jones St in Highgate Hill and Quay St in the CBD.

“Council is committed to preserving the long-standing traditional character buildings of our neighbourhoods, as they form an important part of our city’s history and cultural identity,” Cr Cooper said.

“To ensure their protection, council has proposed a draft Temporary Local Planning Instrument be applied to protect those properties at 18, 20 and 26 Jones St and 54 and 58 Quay St immediately while enabling longer term planning provisions to be prepared while it is in effect.

“We’re standing up for our city’s cultural heritage by pushing to ensure these special homes are protected, and making sure any development on these sites is in line with community expectations.”

The protection will last for up to a year once the TLPI is adopted and will ensure any future development would respect the historical character of the building.

It will require approval by the State Government before it is introduced.

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk thanked ALP Cr Helen Abrahams for bringing two of the homes to the council’s attention.

“I thank Cr Abrahams, I believe in a couple of cases she’s brought homes to our attention that ought to be listed, our investigations show that is the case.”

Cr Abrahams (The Gabba ward) said it would save three homes in her ward which were slated for demolition to build a 51-unit development.
