THE  Gabba ward could deliver the Greens its first candidate to be elected to a Queensland government, as votes come down to the wire.

When City South News went to print, the LNP’s Sean Jacobs held the lead in primary votes, followed by Jonathan Sri for The Greens and Labor’s Nicole Lessio, before absentee, postal votes and preferences were counted.

But a spokesman for the Electoral Commission of Queensland said it was likely the result would not be known until after Tuesday, when the deadline for receiving postal votes closed.

Griffith University political expert Paul Williams said it would be “really tight”.

“The LNP is still far enough in front to be in the final count,” Dr Williams said.

‘It’s going to be a three horse race.”

Mr Sri said he was “cautiously optimistic” as counting continued.

“We’re already starting to plan just in case we do get elected,” Mr Sri said.

Mr Jacobs said he was “really happy” with the primary count.

“Obviously preferences are a bit tough for us,” Mr Jacobs said.

“There’s all kinds of predictions, it just depends on who you talk to, I don’t want to premeditate anything.”

A spokeswoman for Ms Lessio said she was still hopeful.

“It’s incredibly close and we’re watching every vote,” she said.
