IT was in their business plan to put Bulimba back on the map for its brewery and six months after opening, Revel Brewing Company have done it.

The Oxford St microbrewery won gold, silver and bronze medals at the Independent Brewers Association 2018 “Indies” awards.

Founder/director Jay Neven said Revel entered four of its core range beers and was pleasantly surprised with the result.

“We’re pretty chuffed. For us to go in as new kid on the block and take out three out of four entries is pretty good,” Mr Neven said.

“We can honestly say we have one of Australia’s best pale ales now ... very proudly.”

This year’s Indies received 756 beer entries from more than 125 breweries.

Revel Brewing Co. received gold for its Oxford Pale Ale, silver for its IPA and bronze for its Tradies Summer Ale.

Bulimba Gold Top was the last beer to put the suburb on the map.

The Bulimba Brewery, located on the other side of the river, now Teneriffe, launched Gold Top in 1899 and is known for its famous TV commercial in the 1960s – a “big, big thirst needs a big, big beer” – later used for VB.

Mr Neven said the brewery was going from strength to strength and he was proud of the team.

“I wanted to start this business and give it the best chance of putting Bulimba back on the map,” he said.

“We went to market to look for a very experienced and qualified Australian brewer and we found Matthew Cuthbert.

“I’ve employed really good people and I’ve given them the latitude to be awesome and be as good as they can be. We’ve collaboratively developed these recipes and they are very unique.

“Six months in and we have one of Australia’s best pale ales and our IPA is arguably second, it’s just great. We’re really excited.”
