The name of the man who faced court in relation to a crash where a 12-year-old boy was sent flying up to 10m in Brisbane’s south on Thursday, can now be revealed.
On Friday morning, detectives from Morningside Child Protection and Investigation Unit attended a Woodridge home, where a 24-year-old Wynnum West man and a 19-year-old Wynnum West man were taken into custody.
Nicholas Peter Dawes, 24, of Wynnum West, faced Brisbane Magistrates Court on November 19.
He was charged with one count each of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, driving without a licence, unregistered vehicle, uninsured vehicle and failing to comply with duties of driver involved in a crash.
He will face court again on Wednesday, November 23, at Brisbane Magistrates Court. Until then he remains remanded in custody.
The 19-year-old Wynnum West man who was also arrested by police last week in relation to this matter was not charged and eventually released.
The man charged was seen on police bodycam footage hiding in the wardrobe of the home before his arrest.
Earlier, police said they would allege the unregistered car was driving away from police at speed before it travelled through a red light at the intersection of Mains Road and Cosmic Street and struck the 12-year-old boy as he crossed the road, causing him to suffer a head injury.
The male driver and his passenger then allegedly exited the car and fled the scene through a nearby shopping centre.
Dramatic footage has revealed the chaotic moments directly after a boy flew up to 10m through the air after he was struck.
The footage shows the injured boy on the ground while a bystander quickly removes his shoes to run after the pair who allegedly fled from the car.
“Seen the whole thing right in front of us,” a witness said.
“Two young blokes, P-platers, ran a red light as this kid, his little brother and dad were crossing the road.
“The boy flew through the air when hit from the crossing to literally near the massive sign there next to the bubble tea place … that’s like a solid 10 metres.
“He was screaming and crying and all bruised, bleeding from the mouth … he didn’t move at all and stayed in the position he was in the whole time after he got hit. He was still conscious too.
“The dad was screaming too. He was really distressed.
“Poor child got hit … we were all trying to call the cops and ambos.
“Please keep this poor boy in your prayers.”
