IF A ghost was going to play a prank on you at Boggo Road Gaol, you can bet it was Casper.

His story is among the ghost tales told by tour guides at Dutton Park’s historic jail.

Ghost Tours Pty Ltd owner Jack Sim has been running tours at Boggo Road Gaol for almost 20 years.

“We started running our ghost tours last century – we started in 1998,” he said.

“Since then we’ve been taking people through the jail for them to hear about its haunted past.

“It’s for ages 10 and over and is very popular with mums and dads, grandparents and guardians to take their kids and learn about Brisbane’s history.

“The jail is a little bit creepy – it's a creepy old place at night.”

The group also runs ghost tours at the South Brisbane Cemetery, Toowong and Nundah.

Mr Sim said none of the stories told on the tour would be found on Google.

“We spoke with and gathered stories from former prison officers and prisoners, plus looked at old newspapers and journals,” he said.

“We especially tell the stories of four of the legendary ghosts of Boggo Road Gaol – Casper, Tripod, Bernie and Ernie.”

He said Casper was a prank ghost performed by officers to scare new officers at the jail.

“Casper was designed to test the mettle of new officers, who were doing the graveyard night shift,” Mr Sim said.

“Some of the stories are definitely creepy, especially when you hear them at night.”
