Police are investigating whether foul play could have led to a body found inside a burnt-out car in a south Brisbane street yesterday.
A police spokesman said investigators were yet to rule out suspicious circumstances linked to the body in Greenslopes and that exactly what happened might not be revealed until forensic examinations were complete.
Earlier, residents of an inner-south suburb shared the sad moments they learnt a body had been discovered.
Neighbour Karla Vaughan, who has lived in the area for six months, said it was a quiet family area so she was shocked when police knocked on her door at 3am to say a body had been discovered in the car.
“I heard loud explosions. I called (firefighters) and the police,’’ she said.
“When I saw a lot of flames I was afraid the fuel tank would explode.
“But the fire crews were here in about five minutes, I could see them coming along Ridge St.’’
Ms Vaughan she had not noticed any anti-social behaviour in the car park where the vehicle was found.
However a groundsman working for the adjacent football clubs said in the past he had noticed needles in the area, which was very dark at night and hidden from street view down an alleyway.
Another neighbour, who declined to be named, said there were a “lot of police cars’’ and they also saw forensic officers working on the vehicle.
“I walk my dog there regularly and have noticed some suspicious vehicles parked there over the last few months,’’ they said.
One neighbour said they saw officers investigating the scene and taking photos.
“We saw two forensic officers wearing the blue hazmat suits pull up,” they said.
“Other officers and a man in a white shirt took photos, they kept moving around a lot and had a blue sheet on a table.
“They then moved the table under the gazebo and placed a white sheet up.”
The car was reported on fire in Pear St, Greenslopes, just after 2am.
Fire crews quickly contained the blaze before a person was found deceased inside the vehicle.
The scene is next to the Thompson Estate Reserve and Annerley Football Club.
A crime scene was declared shortly after.
A police spokesman said investigations were under way into the person’s identity and the circumstances surrounding the incident.
