Boats flood Moreton Bay during coronavirus pandemic as the fish and squid continue to bite, writes an expert in his weekly column.

Talk about leaving on a boat – I have never seen that many boats on the water in my life and what a great weekend it was.

Calm seas, lots of families out catching plenty of fish and squid.

The whiting were monsters in the maroon gutter on the Rous channel entrance and also at the Amity Banks, most fish were around the 32cm mark with some around 34cm – that’s big whiting for our bay.

The squid were in the same area and lots of them at that.

They were very aggressive attacking all coloured squid jigs but found the prawn orange patterns working the best and 3.5 in size.

Even saw a squad of about 30 squid swimming past, which I have never seen before and from all reports plenty of them were caught.

So if you did not get inked you were one of the lucky ones.

The school mackerel were a little slow but managed a couple on the way out west of the Hope Banks and a few squire and flathead around the bay islands.

The prawns are thick with hundreds of boats getting bucket loads and the sand crabs are plentiful as well, the bay just keeps giving even with all the traffic there were plenty of fish and fun for the families.

A few ordinary days coming up but lets hope all gets better and to all stay safe and look after the elderly.
