THE Sandgate Girl Guide Hut is 90 years old and all former guides are invited to join in the celebration this Sunday, October 28.

Sandgate Girl Guides began meeting in 1923 at Sandgate State School but it wasn’t until five years later that they received a permanent space to gather.

Sandgate Girl Guide leader Leith Hayward said it was great to be able to celebrate the anniversary of the hut considering how much work had gone into obtaining the building 90 years ago.

“It is important to celebrate the guide hut because even though guiding in Sandgate is 95 years old, it took the guides of the era five years of fundraising events, including dances, to raise the money to build the hut for a permanent place to meet in,” she said.

“We are starting the day off with an opening ceremony, followed by cutting of a cake and morning tea. We welcome anyone to bring and share photos, uniforms and their memories of the past Sandgate Guides on the day as well.

“There will be fun activities for the girls to engage in on the day and a time capsule will be made.”

Earlier this year the guide hut was struck by a branch which displaced the guides from their meeting place for a while.

Miss Hayward said the guides were pleased to be back in their hut and were looking forward to the celebrations.

“At first they were in awe at how old guiding is, and were amazed at how old the hut is. It is pretty amazing that we were the eighth registered unit in 1923 and are still going strong,” she said.

“The highlight will be meeting past guides and hearing their stories of what they did when they were guides and sharing their photos, giving us a chance to see how and what impact guiding has given them throughout their lives.”

The celebration will begin at 10am and will be fittingly held on October 28, which is the same date the hut officially opened in 1928. All past and present guides are encouraged to join in the fun and share their memories at 55 Burnett Pl, Sandgate.
