If you are looking for a new best friend, the RSPCA animal adoption sale this weekend is a good place to start.
The hardest part will be choosing just one pet, with adoption fees reduced to $29 for all animals, regardless of size or species. This includes dogs and cats as well as smaller animals like guinea pigs and birds.
If you’re in the market for a horse, goat, pig, chicken or sheep, that’s also an option.
Michael Beatty said the RSPCA adoption drive will be held across the country with a mission to clear its shelters, including more than 800 animals in Queensland.
“Queensland has 865 animals available for adoption. Some have been in care for months so we are hoping many of the long-timers will also find owners this weekend,” Mr Beatty said.
“Last year, 2,792 animals found homes across the country in the RSPCA’s most successful adoption promotion to date.”
Despite the discounted fees, all regular adoption procedures will still be followed. Each animal looking for a home will be desexed, vaccinated and microchipped, and prospective adopters will be vetted.
Mr Beatty said potential pet owners would be buying animals at a heavily reduced price.
“Even though the $29 adoption fee does not come close to covering the cost of treating and caring for the animals, you can’t put a price on finding forever homes for animals in need.”
The lower adoption prices have not led to an increase in animals being returned to shelters, RSPCA research has found.
The Clear the Shelters campaign will run at all RSPCA centres, op shops, World for Pets stores and all affiliated Petbarn stores. There may be some pets that have lower adoption fees.
The sale will run from Friday, February 22 to Sunday February 24.
