Victoria Point State High School has plenty to celebrate in 2019

There’s more than one way to measure success and new data analysed at the weekend shows Victoria Point SHS hit the highest marks consistently making it a top Redlands Coast state school in 2018.

Victoria Point State High School students have two things to celebrate this week.

The appointment of new school leaders for 2019 and its “remarkable OP” results, topping Redland City state schools for the first time in a data analysis of OP results and My School NAPLAN scores.

Federal Bowman MP Andrew Laming released data this week which compared OP data from the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) with My School Year 9 NAPLAN scores back in 2015.

Mr Laming said the analysis, which put Victoria Point State High School seniors of 2018 at the top of Redland City state schools for the first time, was just another set of data which provided insights into student performance.

“No single number captures the school or student journey,” he said.

“It is impressive to get as many OPs above 8 as year 9 NAPLAN scores in the top two bands, but Victoria Point was the only State school to do it.”

“Alexandra Hills has been at or near the top each year, so it is a significant achievement for Victoria Point to pip them.”

Redlands MP Kim Richards, who attended the leadership ceremony yesterday, said Victoria Point State High School was performing well across both academic and vocational pathways.

“They are seeing outstanding results,” Ms Richards said.

“Much of this is attributed to Principal Scot Steinhardt and his incredible team that are driving an agenda that strives for perfection knowing they will catch excellence along the way.”

“This is reflected particularly in the number of students receiving an OP1-15 increasing from 73.1% in 2017 to 86.5% in 2018.”

Mr Laming said the analyses adjusted for schools with low NAPLAN sitting rates and schools that “discouraged students from OP programs”.

“For the first time, VET outcomes will also be included, with results updated in the coming weeks,” he said.

Mr Laming invited families to investigate the data.

“Gain is a far more powerful metric than snapshots because it tells us something of the school journey,” he said.

“It removes the advantage that wealthy schools have because these institutions are more likely to enrol advantaged students to start with.”

Mr Laming said “unlike the current rankings, his gain measure slightly disadvantages wealthier schools, because their students start from a higher base.

“This analysis examines only the top third of the State; those students who achieved top three naplan bands or OPs above 15,” he said.

“This means that schools are not disadvantaged for enrolling high-need or naplan-exempt students.”

He said the shift to ATAR for 2020 would lead to “gain metrics” applying to the top two thirds of students “meaning schools whose efforts target lower performing students will be more clearly recognised than occurs currently”.

Mr Laming will present the 2018 results to Redland City principals this week.
