The life of a Redlands dad spiralled out of control following undiagnosed health conditions and a death in the family, a court has heard.

A Redlands dad in his early twenties trafficked in MDMA to support his own daily usage, which consisted of up to half-a-gram a day, as well as daily cocaine abuse, a court has heard.

Thornlands man Tristan Jeffrey Kamp, 22, pleaded guilty in Brisbane Supreme Court on Wednesday to 17 drug-related offences which included, most seriously, trafficking in a dangerous drug, 10 counts of supplying a dangerous drug, and two counts of possessing a commercial quantity of a dangerous drug.

The court heard Kamp trafficked in MDMA between March 31 – July 3 last year, when he was arrested and charged following a search warrant on a Wakerley address which uncovered a variety of dangerous drugs and drug paraphernalia.

Kamp had been supplying drugs semi-regularly in the months prior to his drug trafficking also, with supplies occurring between January 18, 2019 – February 26, 2020, at Brisbane, Cleveland and elsewhere.

Justice Declan Kelly QC commented in his sentencing remarks Kamp had faced “significant difficulties” in his short life thus far.

They included being raised by his mother only since the age of three, losing his manufacturing job due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the grief of losing a sibling, battling undiagnosed mental health conditions, and becoming addicted to dangerous drugs.

Justice Kelly told the court Kamp had been using cannabis since age 12 and MDMA since 15, becoming addicted to the latter drug such that he was consuming up to half-a-gram daily, as well as cocaine.

He noted Kamp seemed “determined to return to the workforce” and was also intent on supporting his two young children and his partner.

Kamp was currently in “stable accommodation” with his stepfather and enjoyed the support of his family.

He said Kamp had also placed himself on a mental health care plan and been diagnosed with ADHD and ASD, for which he planned to consult with a psychiatrist.

These factors, together with Kamp’s “limited” criminal history, meant Kamp should continue his rehabilitation in the community, Justice Kelly said.

He sentenced Kamp to two years and eight months’ imprisonment with immediate court-ordered parole.
