Tiffany Eve Thorne, 38, of Capalaba jailed for potentially deadly crash in escape attempt

A woman’s decision to dodge cops in a stolen car was just one misadventure during her year of behaving badly.

A serial drug offender who risked lives with a spectacular inner city crash while trying to escape police, has copped months in jail.

Appearing at Cleveland Magistrates Court on Friday Tiffany Eve Thorne, 38, of Capalaba pleaded guilty to a string of charges.

They included dangerous operation of a vehicle, unlawful use of a vehicle, failing to remain at an incident and evading police, among a host of others.

The court heard Thorne was behind the wheel of a stolen Hyundai on July 9 last year when the sight of police attempting an intercept sent her into a panic.

Serving a 12-month intensive corrections order for drug offending in the community at the time, the serial offender floored the gas, blew through an inner city red light and crashed into another vehicle.

The force of the impact spun her vehicle 180 degrees and sent it into a 40 metre skid before coming to a stop, according to police.

Thorne ran from the scene without checking on the driver she collided with.

The incident was but one of a number of offences she committed last year.

On June 25 she stole a pokie player’s winnings at a pub.

On July 11 she stole $105 in fuel at a Fairfield service station while driving a stolen Toyota.

On August 4 she drove while SPER suspended.

On August 21 she was captured on CCTV with five stolen handbags in her possession.

On October 14 she stole $240 in clothes and a $140 pair of headphones at Garden City.

And on October 23 she stole perfume.

It came on the back of an “appalling” 11-page criminal and five-page traffic history that saw her on consistent supervised community orders since 2015, according to police.

“She gets straight out and steals other expensive items such as vehicles, places members of the community at significant risk, driving through a pedestrian crossing,” police prosecutor Sergeant Angela Tetley said.

“She has been given every opportunity by the courts … the pendulum (of justice) must swing to the community.”

Defence solicitor Katelyn Sherrin said her client’s offending was mostly driven by a drug addiction and trauma.

The court heard Thorne had suffered deep trauma as a teen and had lost numerous family members last year within a two-month period.

However, magistrate Deborah Vasta noted Thorne had “been on probation for the past 11 years” and could not blame past trauma on risking lives while “driving crazily”.

With 114 days in pre-sentence custody declared as time served, Thorne was sentenced to 21 months’ jail with a June 3 parole release date.

She was further disqualified from driving for two years and seven months and ordered to pay $280 in restitution.
