Thornlands woman Emily Louise Chalk, 22, threatens to kill man with knife during drunken event

A 22-year-old mother of three has sworn off alcohol after a bizarre violent event during a night out with friends.

How Australia's national lockdown dramatically changed our drinking habits

A young mother who assaulted and chased a man with a knife while threatening to kill him and kicked a hole in a police vehicle screen, has told a court she now realises she can’t “even have one drink” given her addictive tendencies.

Emily Louise Chalk, 22, was supported by her mother when she pleaded guilty to assault occasioning bodily harm and wilful damage to police property at her Cleveland Magistrates Court appearance today.

The court heard on March 25 Chalk went to a friend’s house in Alexandra Hills when her “unregulated drinking” devolved into a violent episode at around 9pm.

According to the prosecution the defendant became enraged when her victim, a man up to then unknown to her, poured her alcohol down a sink and threatened to call police.

An “erratic” and “highly emotional” Chalk chased the man with a knife, threatened to kill him and eventually punched him in the face after the knife was removed from her grip.

The court heard Chalk demanded the keys of her victim’s vehicle but would “decamp on foot” after the man offered to drive her.

Police found the defendant wandering in the neighbourhood at around 11.45pm.

A heavily intoxicated Chalk proceeded to kick a hole through a police vehicle’s perspex screen and would eventually be transported to Redland Hospital.

Defence solicitor Alina Somerville said her client had been making significant inroads to a serious ice addiction when she drank too much on the night, of which she could remember little.

Ms Somerville said Chalk had experienced significant trauma as a teen and had “spiralled out of control” after she lost brief custody of her children.

The defence said their client had a slip on the night when she drank too much.

“She now realises she can’t even have one drink, such is the pull of her addictive tendencies,” Ms Somerville said.

Magistrate Deborah Vasta said Chalk had at the age of 22 weathered a “very, very rocky journey” and ought to be proud of the significant personal gains she had made.

Chalk was sentenced to 18 months’ probation and ordered to pay $500 in damages to the Queensland Police Service.

She was further ordered to pay her assault victim $300 in restitution and placed on a non-contact order until 2023.

No conviction was recorded.
