The Local Raby Bay closes suddenly after tough years of trading

Covid, staff shortages and even delays in getting coffee machines — non-stop challenges have forced the sudden closure of a beloved bayside bar, cafe and restaurant.

One of the bayside’s most innovative, fun-loving venues has shocked its loyal customers after announcing it will close.

The Local Raby Bay was still trading on the weekend.

But directors Andy Olds and Paul Piert announced on its Facebook page on Tuesday that they had decided to close, effective immediately.

The venue, known for its inventive cocktails, unusual range of beers, great food and events such as Balls Out Bingo and live entertainment, had struggled with staff shortages for at least 18 months.

Despite offering above-award wages, bonuses and staff discounts it closed temporarily last year after Covid hammered its team.

The cafe, bar and restaurant, on the scenic marina strip on Shore St West, advertised late last year for everything from front-of-house staff to a bar supervisor.

It said at the time that it was expanding hours and growing the business, including introducing a tapas menu earlier this month.

But Chilly Boys Pty Ltd (trading as The Local Raby Bay and Bar One Raby Bay) went into voluntary liquidation this week, with insolvency experts Jirsch Sutherland appointed.

“It is with great sadness and is a huge disappointment that we have to announce the immediate closure of The Local Raby Bay,’’ the venue posted.

“The last three years have been extremely challenging for everyone in the hospitality industry and we simply had to decide this course of action for the wellbeing of all concerned.

“We would like to thank everyone who has supported the business throughout the last three years and to all the amazing staff that have worked so hard.

“Please continue to support your local businesses moving forward.’’

Locals took to the bar’s Facebook page in droves to express their condolences and sadness.

Andrew posted: “It’s hard to appreciate just how challenging the retail and hospitality industry became over the last couple of years — very sad news to hear guys, we had some great times there over the years.’’

Leanne wrote: “So sorry to hear this. We have spent many enjoyable nights with you and held a few celebrations at The Local. You will be missed.’’

The venue catered for functions of up to 80 people and was hosting Balls Out Bingo, hosted by drag performers, up until earlier this month.

It held a wide range of events including cocktail masterclasses and was known for its unusual cocktails such as pornstar martinis.

As well as continued staff shortages, which forced temporary closures and restricted opening hours last year, in March the venue told customers that the floods had delayed the arrival of a new coffee machine.

The same month, the Office of Liquor and Gaming Regulation allowed a change to the bar’s licensing conditions to include live music, despite some complaints from nearby apartment owners about noise from The Local Raby Bay and two other venues.

The OLGR noted in its approval that the area was a mixed-use zone and some noise should be expected.

The venue was contacted for comment.
