Cylinder Beach on Minjerribah North Stradbroke Island is usually where tourists stop to go whale watching. But last week, a group of tourists got to see a different side to the island’s native animals when a surfing kangaroo got out of the water and hopped over to check out their beach picnic.
The group, which included a visitor from South America, was sitting on the beach at sun down this week, when the cheeky roo surfed into the beach and then bounded towards their afternoon drinks.
After a quick shake down, the drenched kangaroo scooted up to see what the tourists were eating.
Brisbane woman Catherine Edwards said she had never see a kangaroo swim so far and was astonished when it beached itself before bouncing straight past where they were sitting.
“We probably called him Skippy, but everyone was watching as he came out of the water and then bounded over to where we were – he was so close,” she said.
“He stopped at our picnic, checked us out and then kept going into the bush behind the beach up towards the pub – it was definitely time for sundowners.”
Jokes were made about how the kangaroo had avoided the expense of a ferry ticket and even arrived on time for a beach barbecue.
The spot was near where the local Redland City Council has built a multimillion-dollar boardwalk at Frenchman’s Beach so tourists can enjoy the beach view.
