Seniors get fit with the help of STAR Fitness classes

Seniors are invited to join a fitness group to improve their strength and mobility. Current attendees say it is great fun and there is even morning tea included too.

FITNESS is an important part of the lives of every and STAR Community Services have made this a priority through their weekly classes designed for those over 65 years of age.

The STAR Fitness Program uses low impact exercises to help seniors maintain strength, mobility and stability, and are run by a professional instructor.

82-year-old Janice Mansfield, of Victoria Point, has attended the classes for the past three years.

“The exercises help me stay mobile and build strength in my muscles,” she said.

“I enjoy seeing my friends every week and having a cup of tea with them after we finish.”

STAR General Manager Patsy Wilshire said the classes were not only useful for fitness but were great to maintain social interaction as well.

“The social aspect of the class is very appealing to many participants,” she said.

“Many seniors live on their own.

“Coming to these weekly classes, having a conversation with others and in a safe and supportive environment makes it easier for everyone to come along and give it a go.”

Instructor Linda Atkinson said exercise was especially important for seniors to keep their mobility.

“A regular exercise routine is not only beneficial but essential to the overall wellbeing of the elderly,” she said.

“Gentle exercises help seniors maintain their general mobility and improve their balance and coordination.

“I have seen remarkable improvement in the overall confidence of many participants, within a short period of time.”

Marie Morrison has attended the classes in Redlands for two years and said they were important for her to manage a medical condition.

“I have Parkinson’s disease. I come to the fitness classes to maintain my balance,” she said.

“It’s been very helpful. The conversations and morning tea afterwards make it an enjoyable weekly outing which I look forward to.”

The classes run several times throughout the week at the STAR Wellness Studio in Raby Bay.
