A young man who “ransacked” a woman’s house and stole nearly $40,000 in jewellery learnt he would be released from custody today.

Appearing at the Cleveland Magistrates Court via video link Daniel Herrero, 22, pleaded guilty to entering a dwelling and committing an indictable offence.

The court heard Herrero had ransacked a Redland Bay woman’s home on May 31, 2018, stealing multiple rings, some with rubies and sapphires, ranging in value between $1500 and $5500.

The total haul was valued at $38,050.

The court was told Herrero was implicated through forensic evidence when police found a pocket knife at the residence stolen at a Sunnybank burglary a few days prior.

The court was further told that Herrero had an extensive criminal history despite his young age, had spent the last 19 months in custody and had in the past committed offences within 48 hours of being released.

Defence solicitor Jason Todman said his client looked forward to prearranged employment and had a “staunch” supporter in his father, with whom he would reside on the Gold Coast.

Magistrate Deborah Vasta acknowledged that the offending had occurred over two years ago, and that Herrero had served his full sentence for other similar offending.

However she warned the defendant that his type of offending did real damage to the community and became habit if it persisted.

The magistrate congratulated Herrero on finishing his Year 12 studies and qualifying for a bachelor placement at university while incarcerated.

The defendant was sentenced to three months’ jail wholly suspended over 12 months with a conviction recorded.

The court was told he would have to quarantine at a private residence for 14 days upon release due to COVID-19 restrictions.
