ANIMALS in the Redlands are set to have a better chance at finding a new home due to a new internal onsite veterinary service established this week.

The Redland City Council announced the new service for the Thornlands-based Redlands Animal Shelter to help further streamline its animal adoption program.

However, the vet service would not be available to the public and would not compete with other local vets.

“Its purpose will be to support the shelter’s internal services,” Mayor Karen Williams said.

“The facilities and services based at Redlands Animal Shelter continue to evolve to support this very important community service. Of course shelter officers do all they can to reunite pets that come into the shelter with their owners.

“But where that is not possible, Council has a duty of care to ensure animals have a reasonable chance at finding another home and a good quality of life while at the shelter.”

The Redland City Council has been rehoming animals through the shelter since 2015 with 320 dogs and 613 cats and kittens finding new homes since the program started.

Ms Williams said animals at the shelter would benefit from the onsite vet service one day per week and would not need to be transported for routine checks, vaccinations and desexing, which is required before adoption.

Drop into the shelter at 264 South Street, Thornlands to meet the cats and dogs currently available for adoption. Animals up for adoption can also be seen at facebook.com/redlandanimalshelter.
