A sombre National Police Remembrance Day ceremony at a Redlands school had an extra special meaning this year, as attendees paid tribute to a driving force behind the local event.
Queensland retired and current police officers paid their respects to fallen officers in the line of duty as part of National Police Remembrance Day, as they gathered at Redland’s Alexandra Hills State High School.
A total of 148 Queensland police officers have lost their lives on the job and ceremonies were held around the state in honour of the departed officers.
Queensland Retired Police Association Redlands Chairman Paul ‘Marty’ Fitzpatrick said this year had a personal significance as it was in part a tribute to former colleague and friend Eddie Gallo, who died.
“Eddie was our former secretary and had the idea of trying to involve the community more, he was always looking to get the QRPA out there,” he said.
“He wanted more people involved and to have them aware of National Police Remembrance Day.”
Fitzpatrick said the day had grown a lot from when it started in Redlands 10 years ago.
“It wouldn’t be what it is if we didn’t have support from the police service, the community and the politicians.”
Representatives from the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services, Ambulance Services and politicians all attended Alexandra State High School.
