Emotions ran high at a bayside court which heard an alleged teen stabbing victim grabbed hold of a 60 cm blade with his bare hands while he was being “shanked” in the groin.

It came as a mother’s anguish rang through Cleveland Magistrates Court on Tuesday when Redland Bay man Vaughan Henry, 18, had his bail firmly denied for the alleged shocking daytime stabbing.

Hospitality worker Henry faced a string of charges.

Principally among them was a charge of grievous bodily harm and a charge of robbery with actual violence while armed/in company/wounded/used personal violence.

Others included possessing dangerous drugs, possessing drug utensils and possessing property suspected to have been used in the commission of a drug offence, among others.

The court heard Henry was captured on CCTV as he allegedly went armed with a 60 cm Bowie-style knife in his pocket to an alleged “drug deal gone wrong” in an alleyway adjacent to Victoria Point Domino’s Pizza, at around 1.30pm on October 29.

Prosecutors described a subsequent harrowing scene.

The court heard Henry allegedly stabbed his victim twice in the groin during the “unprovoked attack” and attempted to also stab him in the stomach and kidneys.

The 18-year-old alleged victim and schoolyard acquaintance of Henry grabbed hold of the knife’s blade with his bare hands in a desperate attempt to defend himself, the court heard.

Taken to hospital via ambulance the teen’s fingers were exposed to the bone and may result in a 10 per cent loss of function in one hand, according to prosecutors.

The court heard multiple community members witnessed the bloody aftermath during which Henry was alleged to have proclaimed another person “put a hit out on you”.

Prosecutors said it was of grave concern that Henry allegedly posted a threatening message reading, “snitch get stitches”, on his Instagram after the event.

Still images from CCTV of Henry allegedly walking “calm and collected” with the knife visible in his pocket to the soon-to-be bloody venue were tendered to the court.

A police prosecutor asked Henry to raise his right hand so the court could see a tattoo on its back – the same tattoo could be seen on photographic stills at the scene, the court was told.

Prosecutors said Henry was captured on CCTV with a 60 cm Bowie-style knife in his pocket.

Alleged photographic imagery of the defendant’s online threats were also tendered, as were images of the wounds suffered by the alleged victim.

Prosecutors said Henry’s risk to the community was further aggravated after an associate of his was reported allegedly following and “death” staring a witness at the Redland Bay Hotel after the stabbing.

Police, the court heard, allegedly found the knife used in the stabbing at Henry’s residence where he lives with his parents.

Defence solicitor Alina Somerville acknowledged the prosecution’s “strong case” and said her client had taken the large knife with him to the alleged cannabis deal for self defence.

Ms Somerville said she was instructed that her client was the actual robbery victim but acknowledged that $280 from the alleged deal was found in the defendant’s possession afterwards.

According to the defence, Henry attempted to move past his alleged victim in the “narrow one-way alley way” and managed to take the knife off the other teen.

A further submission was made that a second knife carried by the alleged victim was also present during the bloody ordeal.

The submission was rejected outright by prosecutors who said no evidence of a second knife was found by officers, nor were any witness statements made supporting its presence.

Police reiterated that footage allegedly showed Henry walking to the venue with the knife and depicted him running away after the stabbing, while the stab victim remained at the scene.

Ms Somerville further noted her client had no criminal history and had strong support in the community.

Henry’s mother and father were both at court.

The defence’s submission that strict reporting duties could counter any alleged threat faced by witnesses was rejected by Magistrate Deborah Vasta.

“So his (Henry’s) version is: he tried to rob me so I had to (allegedly) shank him three times?” Ms Vasta asked of the defence.

“This sounds like an alleged drug deal gone wrong.

“This kid has sustained some serious injuries, so even in your own version you are likely going to jail.

“You are clearly mixed up in the drug scene and you are running around with 60cm knives down your pants.

“And anyone who starts their criminal record with that level of (alleged) craziness … you are living on another planet.”

Henry had his bail and was remanded in custody principally for the protection of witnesses.
