Queenslanders running hot at the Australian Athletic Championships

Queenslanders were running hot at the Australian Athletic Championships being held in Sydney, with a truck load of gold medals on the way back over the border.

QUEENSLANDERS were running hot at the Australian Athletic Championships being held in Sydney, with a truck load of gold medals on the way back over the border.

Jamie Hiscock (Sheldon College past student, 1500m under 20s), Eloise Tolstoff (Somerville House, high jump under 16), Angelina Tignani (St Aidan’s Anglican Girls’ School, under 16 javelin), Isabella Harte (St Margaret’s Anglican Girls School, 1500m and 3000m under 15), Abbie French (Ferny Grove State High, under 16 long jump) and Abby Craswell (Moreton Bay College, long jump Para under 16) waved the women’s flag aloft with gold medal efforts.

Gold Coast pair Lani Dance (under 14 hammer throw) and Britney Ignr (Gold Coast, under 15 long jump) also won gold.

In under age men competition, St Joseph’s Nudgee College sprinter Ashley Wong (under 16, 100m), The Gap Little Athletics product Connor Duggan (under 16 high jump), Anglican Church Grammar School past student Sam Hurwood (110m under 20 hurdles), Flynn Pumpa (3000m, under 16s) and Alexander Stitt (1500m under 20) were gold medallists.

Harte, third at the Australian All Schools, rose to the occasion on the big stage to win when it counted most in her middle distance race.

Tolstoff, a Mt Gravatt Little Athletics product, leapt 1.71m to win

Duggan, coached by world renowned Eric Brown at QU Athletics Club, won the under 16 high jump after clearing 1.97m.

Mayne Harriers’ athlete Elly Buckholz blazed to second place in the 100m under 20 dash.

Mt Alvernia student Jemma Keefe, a product of Bracken Ridge Little Athletics Club, was having a huge meet.

After placeing third in the under 15 javelin, she then backed it up with a silver medal winning effort in the discus. Keefe also made two other finals in the shot put and 90m hurdles.

Georgie Gilroy (Brisbane State High School, under 14 1500m) also stormed to a silver medal.

Gilroy is from the training stable of Olympian Lizel Moore who trains a host of outstanding young middle distance athletes in Brisbane’s western suburbs.

Kaleb Clark, an outstanding all around athlete, was a member of the winning Queensland 4x100m relay and also snared snared an individual bronze in the under 16 long jump.

Liam Wyett from Brisbane’s inner eastern suburbs was a proud winner of the silver medal in the 400m para under 20 event.

Carter Blades won the 400m under 15 and Wynnum Manly Little Athletics product Joe Templin finished third in the under 15 long jump.

Mount St Michael’s School past student Brooke Gillmeister was fifth in the under 20 hurdles 100m finals

Ashmore walker Sam McCure completed an outstanding first two days for Queenslanders by winning the under 14 race walk.
