A Brisbane man whom police allege tried to carjack a man at a bayside Bunnings on Friday previously extorted and threatened to kill the family of a man with his bikie brother while trying to become drug “kingpins”, a court has heard.
Stafford man Geoffrey Declan Foran, 33, had his bail firmly denied at his Cleveland Magistrates Court appearance on Tuesday.
He faces charges of attempted robbery with actual violence while armed and unlawful use of vehicle.
Police will allege Foran with three other individuals on Friday crashed into and blocked the vehicle of a victim at Capalaba Bunnings with a stolen vehicle and produced a replica pistol.
A second firearm allegedly used in the matter is yet to be located.
The alleged attempted robbery failed when Foran and his associates were denied entry to the alleged victim vehicle when its doors were locked.
A police prosecutor said the alleged offending came on the back of an extremely serious criminal history featuring bikie links.
Foran in 2014 threatened to kidnap and kill a victim’s family with his brother Lloyd Michael Foran, a “known and documented member of the Bandidos MC”, the prosecutor said.
The court heard Foran in 2014 intercepted the victim’s vehicle, climbed into it uninvited and threatened a man with a knife.
Prosecutors said Foran pleaded guilty to that offending which was committed while trying to establish drug networks with his brother in order to become drug “kingpins” in Bundaberg.
“There is no condition that this court will be able to put in place that is going to give comfort to the community that he will not (allegedly) reoffend,” a police prosecutor said.
Defence solicitor Daniel Barker said his client planned to live with his mother and sister in Warwick – where he had never offended – should he be granted bail.
Acknowledging his client was on parole at the time of his alleged offending after a release from custody in August last year, Mr Barker submitted Foran’s risk to witnesses could be adequately reduced with his relocation and strict non-contact and reporting duties.
However, Magistrate Deborah Vasta said she would have denied the defendant’s bail even if he had no criminal history, given the prosecution’s “very strong case”.
The court heard Foran’s fingerprints were allegedly found on the vehicle he attempted to rob on Friday.
His chances at bail were further reduced given police allegedly found his replica pistol under his bed upon his arrest.
“I am sure you will not hang around (if granted bail),” Ms Vasta said.
Under Queensland law possession of a pistol carries a mandatory 18-month prison sentence, which, together with Foran’s other alleged offences, would make for an expected seven-year prison sentence should he be found guilty, the court heard.
Foran had his bail denied, was remanded in custody and is next scheduled to appear before court on May 5.
