Watch: Queensland police catch drivers speeding, drink driving

A retired nurse bereaved at a friend’s illness was found lying in the middle of a road with significant injuries, after crashing her moped while almost four times the legal alcohol limit, a court has heard.

Josephine Mary Radovic, 57, was supported by a friend at Cleveland Magistrates Court yesterday where she pleaded guilty to one count of driving while under the influence of liquor.

The court heard Radovic had attempted to ride 300 metres to an ailing friend’s house at Point Lookout on North Stradbroke Island at around 11.10pm on November 26.

Police would arrive to find the mother of three lying in the road with “significant injuries” to a wrist and ribs.

Tests would confirm she had a blood-alcohol reading of 0.179.

Defence counsel said Radovic had been under significant stress at the time, had completed the Queensland Traffic Offenders Program and had sought counselling.

The Point Lookout woman had yet to fully recuperate from her injuries, was “very remorseful” and “glad no one else had gotten hurt”.

Two references were tendered on behalf of the defendant who the court heard holds a masters degree.

It comes as Queensland’s road fatalities continue to climb.

Magistrate Deborah Vasta informed the court 32 people had died on our roads since the beginning of the year – 17 more than this time last year.
