A bayside Coles worker whom police allege chased his 30-week pregnant partner with a hammer and doused a house in petrol after cutting electrical cords has had his bail denied.

Appearing at Cleveland Magistrates Court on Friday, Paul Cameron Stewart, 32, of Alexandra Hills had his bail denied after the “extreme allegations” against him were revealed.

“I am concerned you will kill someone,” magistrate Deborah Vasta said when she denied Stewart his bail.

Stewart faces multiple charges including making threats (domestic violence offence), making threats, common assault (domestic violence offence), common assault, wilful damage and wilful damage (domestic violence offence).

Police will allege Stewart at 8.30am on March 10 entered his aunt’s house while dressed from head to toe in black with a ski-mask covering his face and carrying a hammer.

His 30-week pregnant partner noticed the home’s power had turned off and heard a suspicious noise before being allegedly confronted by a black-clad and hammer-armed Stewart.

Police allege the terrified woman ran from the house with the defendant on her heels.

She stumbled and fell in the front yard and Stewart allegedly made a motion as if he were about to strike her with the hammer before uttering a chilling threat.

“Don’t come back or I will kill you,” Stewart allegedly said according to police.

The alleged victim ran across a road and sought refuge with tradesmen who witnessed some of the event, the court heard.

They subsequently observed Stewart toting a television from his aunt’s property following the alleged incident, a police prosecutor said.

The alleged horror continued when Stewart’s family members arrived some time later to find he had allegedly stabbed all four tires on a family vehicle.

When they entered the aunt’s house they were shocked to find Stewart had allegedly cut and left multiple electrical appliance cords exposed, having doused the house in petrol.

The defendant’s allegations were further aggravated when, the court was told, he was captured on CCTV purchasing fuel on three occasions on one day, including filling up a jerry can.

Defence solicitor Rhys Foster said his client had only property offences on his criminal history and noted the admittedly “extreme allegations” spoke of alleged behaviour “highly out of character”.

Mr Foster further said Stewart would challenge facets of the allegations, including that he threatened to kill his partner on the day.

Stewart would seek a DNA test from his partner who only “showed up recently” while pregnant at his aunt’s house, the court was told.

The defendant, who works as a night fill manager at Coles, would live with his brother should he be released from remand.

However, Ms Vasta was not swayed, stating it was a “pretty strong case”.

“Morgues are littered with people from defendants who had no history (of violent offending).

“I am concerned that you will kill someone.”

Stewart was remanded in custody and is next scheduled to appear before court on April 8.
