Ormiston student Rachel Deakin recounts terrifying incident

A young Bayside medical student has revealed details of a horrifying incident she suffered at the hands of two pedestrians, minutes from when another driver’s windscreen was smashed by a man walking on the road.

Two more people have shared chilling encounters with a raging pedestrian who refused to move off a residential road in the middle of the night then turned on a passing car.

A bayside medical student revealed her scary ordeal after reading of a similar incident encountered by another driver in the same area, on the same night.

Rachel Deakin, 24, had been driving home from university at night when she encountered the two pedestrians as they approached her vehicle.

The student, from Ormiston, said she was driving on Delancey Street, Ormiston at 7pm on April 6 2024 in her Toyota Yaris when she saw a young man and woman walking in the middle of the road.

“It was 7pm and they were walking very slowly, with no haste I slowed down for them,” Miss Deakin said.

“They weren’t moving out of the road so I flashed my lights (to alert them) and when the man wearing a bucket hat turned around he looked absolutely fuming.”

Five minutes after Miss Deakin’s interaction with the couple, another Ormiston resident recorded dashcam footage of separate incident where a man in a bucket hat jumped on his vehicle and smashed his windscreen.

“He gave me a look dead in the eyes … I was petrified,” Miss Deakin said.

Miss Deakin said the man ran to her car, which was nearly stationary, and opened the driver’s door.

“He was so close to me looking very angry and I swerved to the left in an attempt to get away,” Miss Deakin said.

“As I swerved the woman came around the other side of my car and tried to open the passenger door,” she said.

Miss Deakin said she swerved into the left lane of the road into oncoming traffic.

“I was terrified, I have never really locked my car doors when driving incase I got into an accident and the doors weren’t able to be opened,” Miss Deakin said.

“I grew up in the Redlands and have never had my guard up,” she said.

Miss Deakin immediately contacted police.

A Queensland Police spokesman said they are investigating Miss Deakin’s reported incident.

“No one was physically injured, and no one reportedly entered the vehicle during the incident,” a spokesman said.

Miss Deakin said she felt like her life flashed before her eyes.

Another Ormiston driver said two pedestrians stopped in front of his friend’s car on the same evening.

“He slammed his hands on the bonnet, he didn’t do anything like this but there’s still hand prints on (the bonnet),” he said.

Queensland Police said there is no further information at this stage.
