North Stradbroke Island woman pursued into her home following unprovoked attack

A North Stradbroke Island elder was left bloodied and hiding in her bathroom when an attempt at goodwill turned vicious.

A young woman who savagely attacked an elder in her North Stradbroke Island community and followed the fleeing victim into her home has been excoriated for her lack of respect.

Cleveland Magistrates Court heard how a 59-year-old good Samaritan was viciously struck to the face in front of her Dunwich home and had to hide in her own bathroom for 15 minutes following the assault, while her attacker continued to scream and yell at her.

Appearing at the court on Tuesday, Shaye Doyle, 18, pleaded guilty to assault occasioning bodily harm and trespass.

The court heard Doyle’s victim was struck to the face without provocation when, at around 1.15am on November 1 last year, she heard two women yelling at one another out the front of her Dunwich home.

A police prosecutor said the woman observed Doyle kick her sister with whom she was fighting and told her to stop.

An intoxicated Doyle, the court heard, turned on the woman and struck her so hard she fell to the ground.

The victim, who the court was told was considered an elder in the close-knit community, was later transferred to the Princess Alexandra Hospital for scans of her bruised left cheek and eye-socket and a cut to her lip.

Defence solicitor Lyle Parker said his client had fought with her sister after an alleged provocative statement made by the sister about Doyle’s boyfriend.

Mr Parker said alcohol inflamed the situation and acknowledged Doyle’s 59-year-old victim had merely tried to help.

With no criminal history to her name Doyle was nonetheless denounced by Magistrate Deborah Vasta.

“The victim came out to help you with (what amounted to) motherly advice,” Magistrate Vasta said.

“She should have been treated with a hell of a lot more respect”.

Doyle was sentenced to 12 months probation and ordered to pay her victim $500 in compensation.

The defendant was further placed on a non-contact order with her victim.
